Let's continue our discussion of the Hardway craps bets. Every now and then, you'll see a casino screw a novice craps player into
believing the casino has a bigger Hardway payoff by giving odds that are written on the craps table layout as "8 for 1" and "10 for 1."
This does appear to better than the odds of 7:1 and 9:1. Look closer! It's written 8 "for" 1, not 8 "to" 1. "8 for 1" means the casino
pays you $8 for a $1 bet when you win, but they keep your original $1 bet. 7:1 (which means 7 "to" 1) means the casino pays you $7
and you still keep your original $1 Hardway craps bet. So, the odds "8 for 1" is the exact same thing as 7:1. Also, the odds written as
"10 for 1" is the exact same thing same as the odds 9:1.
A player can decide to take down or call off their Hardway craps bets at any time. This can happen after you make your point and
before the next come-out roll. Most players bet the Pass Line. After a game ends, they tend to make another Pass Line craps bet.
When they do that, they hope for the number 7 to appear on the come-out roll because a 7 on the come-out roll is a winner for the
Pass Line. A 7 on the come-out is also a loser for the Hardway bets, so most players call off their Hardway bets for the come-out roll
because they want to hope for a 7 on the come-out so their Pass Line bet will win. When you call off your Hardway craps bet, the
dealer will place an "off" button on your chips to indicate that the Hardway bet is off and not working. After the come-out roll and you
establish a point, then you can call your Hardway craps bet back on and working, in which case the dealer will remove the "off" button
to indicate your Hardway bet is working again.
The craps Hardway bets are positioned in the middle of the craps table layout. The stickman controls the Hardway bets (they are not
self-service bets). To make a Hardway craps bet, get the stickman's or dealer's attention and then toss your chip to the middle of the
table. At the same time you toss your craps chip, tell the stickman or dealer which Hardway number you want to bet.
