Let's continue our discussion of the craps Buy bet. The craps Buy bet gets better as your Buy bet amount gets bigger (i.e., as
you increase the dollar amount of your bet). Let's assume you make a $25 Place craps bet on the 4. When the bet wins, you win $45
for your $25 bet (review the article on Place bets to learn the Place odds for the 4). Now, let's assume you make a $25 Buy craps bet
and pay a $1 vigorish to get true odds, which are 2:1 for the 4. When a $25 Buy craps bet on the 4 wins, you win $50 but also have to
pay a $1 vigorish, which results in a net payoff of $49. Comparing the two craps bets, the winning $25 Place craps bet nets you $45,
and the winning $25 Buy craps bet nets you $49. Obviously, in this example, the Buy craps bet is a better craps strategy than the
Place bet on the number 4.
In the example above for the $25 Buy craps bet, the vigorish is only $1. The 5% vig for a $25 Buy bet really calculates to be $1.25, but
the casino doesn't have chips at a craps table that are less $1, so the vigorish is rounded down. Vigs with a fraction of 50 cents or
less are rounded down, and vigs with a fraction greater than 50 cents are rounded up. So, a $50 Buy craps bet has only a $2 vig
although 5% of $50 is $2.50. Some casinos don't let you get away with too much. Let's assume you make two separate $50 Buy
craps bets at the same time. Instead of rounding down the vigorish for each Buy craps bet and charging a total vigorish of $4 (that's $2
for each $50 Buy craps bet), the casino might charge you the full $5 vig (that's $2.50 for each $50 Buy craps bet, so $2.50 + $2.50 =
$5).
A lot of casinos don't make you pay the vigorish until after you win the craps Buy bet. But some casinos make you pay the vigorish up
front when you make the Buy bet. For a $10 Buy craps bet on the number 10 with a vigorish up front, you must give the dealer $11
when you make the craps Buy bet (that's $10 for your Buy bet and $1 for the vigorish). Then, if a 7-out appears, you lose $11. To
attract more customers and get more business, a lot of casinos make you pay the vigorish after you win the craps Buy bet. For a $10
